The School
Why Roebourne?
Located in the heart of the Pilbara, Roebourne District High School (DHS) is deeply connected to its Aboriginal heritage, with approximately 98% of our students identifying with the Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi, and Banyjima peoples. Our students come to school with strong ties to their language, culture, and community, which are central to our teaching and learning approaches.
What Makes Roebourne Special?
At Roebourne DHS, we believe that every student matters. Our Big Picture Learning approach caters to the individual needs and interests of each student, ensuring their learning is deeply personalised, relevant, and culturally connected. Our students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning while being supported by a dedicated team of teachers, Aboriginal Islander Education Officers (AIEOs), and Education Assistants (EAs).
Our Year 12 students graduate with an International Big Picture Learning Credential, a qualification that sets them on a pathway to further education, training, or employment, both locally and globally.
Why You’ll Love It Here
Roebourne DHS offers a unique teaching opportunity where you can transform lives and be part of a global movement in education. As an Advisory Teacher, you’ll have the freedom to design learning experiences that are meaningful, authentic, and deeply connected to students’ interests and the world around them.
This role is more than just teaching, it’s about becoming a trusted mentor and guide, helping students develop their passions, engage with their community, and succeed in their chosen pathways. You’ll also benefit from a supportive and collaborative environment that encourages ongoing professional development.
The Role
Roebourne DHS invites you to join our team as a Secondary Advisory Teacher, where you'll work within the renowned Big Picture Learning Australia design. Help students explore their passions, develop practical skills, and achieve their potential in a culturally rich and supportive environment.
As an Advisory Teacher, you will go beyond traditional teaching roles to become a mentor, guide, and advocate for your students. You’ll support a small group of students (17-20 students) as they take ownership of their learning through personalised, hands-on experiences. Using the Big Picture Learning design, you’ll help students connect their interests and strengths to meaningful projects and real-world experiences.
Key Responsibilities of the role include:
- Build deep, meaningful relationships: Advisory Teachers form close bonds with their students, fostering an environment based on trust, respect, and care. You’ll be the key contact for students and their families, working to understand their unique needs and aspirations.
- Personalised Learning Plans: Develop learning plans that reflect each student’s passions, talents, and goals. These plans guide students through a curriculum that is relevant to their lives and future pathways.
- Project-Based Learning: Integrate explicit teaching with project-based learning. You’ll help students explore real-world problems, conduct research, and present their findings through exhibitions.
- Internships and community engagement: Connect students with real-world experiences through internships within the local community and beyond, helping them gain hands-on experience with a mentor in areas of personal interest.
- Ongoing support and mentorship: As an Advisory Teacher, you’ll guide students’ academic, personal, and social development, supporting them in building portfolios that map to the Western Australian Curriculum and demonstrate their growth and achievements.
Our ideal applicant is a teacher who:
- Is committed to building strong, respectful relationships with students, families, and the wider community.
- Has experience and passion for student-centred learning.
- Has strong organisational and collaborative skills.
- Values culture and diversity and has the skills to incorporate the rich Aboriginal heritage of our students into their learning experiences.
If you’re excited by the opportunity to work within the Big Picture Learning model and want to be part of a school that values relationships, culture, and personalised learning, we encourage you to apply!
