About The Role:
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated academic looking to advance their career in teaching, research and engagement. They will be responsible for teaching, research and engagement in tourism, hospitality and events (and related subjects). They will be expected to undertake undergraduate teaching and, subject to experience and expertise, post-graduate teaching and engage in innovative curriculum and content development. They will also be provided with opportunities for Higher Degree by Research supervision, leadership, and professional development, where appropriate. Mentoring will be provided to ensure high-quality HDR supervision where required, i.e. for applicants with limited HDR supervision experience. They will also be encouraged to work closely with industry partners in both teaching and research and will be provided with mentoring, as required. Curtin’s THE discipline is a research-intensive area meaning that conducting high-quality research that is industry-connected and publishable in quality outlets is an important expectation for the role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver high-quality and innovative courses in tourism, hospitality and events (and related subjects).
- Develop course materials and assessment tasks that align with trends in the contemporary and future labour market and with the learning objectives of the respective programs.
- Deliver high-quality undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching.
- Provide academic guidance and support to students, such as postgraduate study options.
- Conduct high quality research, including publications in high quality outlets (e.g., A*/A-ranked tourism, hospitality and events journals).
- Identify sources of funding, develop and submit funding applications, and secure external research funding to support research activities.
- Identify opportunities for demand-driven research and engage with industry partners, policymakers and other stakeholders to understand their research needs.
- Engage in professional development, and internal/external service and engagement.
- Contribute to HDR supervision.
- Contribute to a positive School/Faculty/University culture reflecting Curtin’s Values of Respect, Integrity, Impact, Courage and Excellence.
- Other duties as directed from time to time.
School of Management and Marketing
The School of Management and Marketing (SoMM) in Curtin Business School, develops globally minded, career-capable graduates, advancing responsible, evidence-based business through innovation in education, research, and engagement. Tourism, Hospitality and Events (THE)
This lecturer position is located within SoMM’s THE discipline with its focus on sustainable management of tourism, hospitality and events. Teaching areas and courses include an undergraduate major and specialisation in Tourism and Hospitality, an Event Management specialisation and a specialisation in Entertainment and Creative Industries. The discipline also offers a Tourism and Hospitality Global major, which provides opportunities to study at two or more of Curtin's global campuses.
Research activities draw on quantitative and qualitative methodologies as well as multi- and inter-disciplinary perspectives including a variety of business and economics disciplines as well as other social sciences. Industry-connected and community-oriented research is facilitated through the renowned Curtin Tourism Research Cluster. Topics include sustainable tourism development; responsible tourist behaviour; event management and development; destination management, governance and marketing; volunteering; hospitality management; special interest tourism; innovation and entrepreneurship in tourism, hospitality and events; and tourism policy.
Role Requirements:
- This is a continuing role, so the successful candidate must have the right to work in Australia. Sponsorship may be considered for the position.
- Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction.
Selection criteria:
- A doctoral qualification in a relevant academic discipline (Tourism, Hospitality, Events or related disciplines) or in the final stages of examination of their doctoral thesis in a relevant field (evidenced by thesis submission).
- Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality teaching in relevant disciplines (Tourism, Hospitality, Events) at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels in accordance with their career stage.
- A track record of/strong interest in working with industry for research, engagement and/or teaching as well as a track record of/strong interest in international collaboration in accordance with their career stage.
- A record of high-quality research commensurate with their career stage as evidenced by publications in relevant disciplines (Tourism, Hospitality, Events), and a clear plan to build a high-quality publications pipeline. In line with career stage, other research initiatives such as evidence of involvement with grant applications will also be considered.
- Demonstrated capacity and willingness for learning and growth, for initiative and for pursuing a team-oriented approach.
