About The Role
The College is currently seeking a casual, multi-talented Head Coach (Basketball).
The Head Coach (Basketball) is responsible for leading and delivering a high-quality senior basketball program that fosters skill development, personal growth, sportsmanship, and a lifelong enjoyment of the sport. This role emphasises fostering a culture of personal growth, sportsmanship, and competitive excellence within the basketball program and involves coaching, game day management and coach mentoring.
The TAS Basketball seasons include an eight game season (girls - Term 1, boys - Term 3) as well as a four week pre-season prior. Canterbury teams also participate in external tournaments from time to time and the Head Coach will also oversee these teams.
Key Responsibilities
Coaching and Player Development
- Deliver coaching and player development across all basketball teams
- Conduct regular training sessions focusing on:
- Technical skill development
- Tactical awareness and execution
- Team dynamics, game understanding, and decision-making
- Coach the First V team in Term 1 (TAS Girls) and Term 3 (TAS Boys), while overseeing all other teams
- Assess individual and team performance, providing constructive feedback
- Monitor player attendance and performance to support balance between sport and academics
- Foster a positive, inclusive team culture
- Mentor athletes on and off the court, promoting resilience, leadership, and sportsmanship
- Work across approximately 8 teams per TAS season
Coach Recruitment & Development
- Support recruitment of coaches in collaboration with the Head of Athletes and Coaching, ensuring quality and compliance
- Provide guidance, mentoring, and support to TAS and JTAS coaches
- Facilitate professional development opportunities
- Collaborate with assistant coaches, trainers, and admin staff to ensure smooth program delivery
Game Preparation & Competition Management
- Lead tactical and strategic planning for competitions
- Oversee pre-game preparation and in-game coaching
- Support tournament planning and participation
- Maintain high standards of organisation and professionalism at training and on game day
Program Development & Other Duties
- Grow and promote the basketball program, attracting new talent
- Oversee team selection and coach external competitions (e.g. CBSQ) as approved
- Act as an ambassador within the College and wider community
- Build partnerships with the local basketball community
- Participate in the College’s Sports Awards Program
- Ensure alignment with College values, promoting personal growth, sportsmanship, and enjoyment of the sport
Essential Qualifications
- Proven experience in coaching basketball at a high level, with a record of success in player and team development.
- CPR and First Aid
- Relevant coaching accreditation (Intermediate or willingness to obtain)
